The Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children in hosting an international research conference entitled "Beyond Firewood: Exploring Alternative Fuels and Energy Technologies in Humanitarian Settings," in New Delhi, India, on December 11-12, 2008.

What is the purpose of this conference?

The conference will bring together developers, practitioners, users of alternative fuels and energy technologies and physical protection strategies appropriate for use in humanitarian settings from all over the world with the aim of sharing experiences and creating new linkages amongst researchers and practitioners, as well as building an empirical basis for fuel-related interventions in humanitarian settings. In addition, the conference will serve as a means of linking experts and technology with sites and regions that are urgently in need of such interventions.

Who should attend?

This research conference will be geared toward local and international NGOs, UN agencies, research institutes, appropriate technology and environmental groups, donors, and any other agencies undertaking or supporting household energy-related interventions in humanitarian settings, development and/or rural contexts; or agencies with an interest in becoming involved in the search for solutions to household energy-related concerns in humanitarian settings. It will also seek to engage field-based practitioners and technical experts who may benefit from a specialized forum for showcasing their work and networking with others. All members of the new International Network on Household Energy in Humanitarian Settings are also specifically encouraged to attend.

Requirements

Conference attendees who are also interested in delivering a presentation or demonstration at the conference are required to submit an abstract via the online abstract submission form available here. The deadline for submission of abstracts has now passed.  Abstracts were reviewed by the conference’s Abstract Review Committee, and successful applicants have been notified. All other attendees are encouraged to register for the conference as soon as possible, as there are limited places available. It is not necessary to deliver a presentation or demonstration in order to attend the conference, though presentations and demonstrations are encouraged.

For last minute conference cancellations, the Women's Commission will honor an 80% refund up until December 10th only.

Sponsorships

The conference will encourage and support (via sponsorships) the attendance of a small number of participants from the global south; specifically from the local and national NGOs, research institutes and universities that are, in many cases, spearheading the development of locally-appropriate cooking fuels and fuel technologies in different humanitarian settings. Further information on sponsorship criteria and the sponsorship application form are available here.  The deadline for sponsorship applications has now passed.
